RECORD STORE DAY（レコード・ストア・デイ、以下RSD）はインディペンデントなレコード・ショップをサポートする目的で日本を含む世界各地で毎年開催されているレコードの祭典で、アナログ需要とともに年々その規模は大きくなっています。
また年によってはクリスマス商戦の始まりを告げる感謝祭（11月の第4木曜日）翌日の金曜日となるブラック・フライデーにレコード・ストア・デイによるBLACK FRIDAYが開催されることも（RSDではブラックフライデーは第2のRECORD STORE DAYではないとしているらしい）。
2018年のRSDのラインナップに登場するボウイ関連のアイテムは1978年の「Isolar IIツアー」の一環として英ロンドンの「アールズ・コート」でおこなわれた公演を3枚のアナログ盤に収めた未発表ライブ・アルバム『Welcome to the Blackout（Live London ’78）』。「Let’s Dance」のフル・レングス・バージョンとライヴ・トラックを収めた12インチ・シングル。さらにアメリカでのプロモーション用として制作され、一般販売は初となる『Bowie Now』の3作品。それから国内企画盤も用意された67年発表のデビュー・アルバムのブルー&レッド・ヴァイナル仕様モノ/ステ180グラム重量盤2LPでの復刻、あわせて4作品が登場。
2017年のラインナップは『Strange Fascination』や『A Portrait In Flesh』といった海賊盤のタイトルで知られてきた1974年プレ・ソウル・ツアーのライヴ・アルバム、そしてトニー・デフリーズが所有していたとされる『Hunky Dory』のプロモーション用レコードの復刻など、限定プレスでの販売とはいえこれまでにない斬新で意義のあるリリースとなりました。
RSDのリリース・アイテムは基本的には開催当日RSDへの参加を表明しているレコードショップの店頭で購入することになります。後日各レコードショップで通販も行われますが、人気のタイトルは即完売になります。ボウイの場合はアメリカやイギリスのRSDでのリリースになるため現地ショップの通販あるいはディスクユニオンなど国内ショップの入荷分に頼ることになりますが、それでも確実に入手できる見込みはありません。最終手段として海外オークションの転売に手をつけることもありなのでしょうけれど、そういったスリルもまたRSDの醍醐味なのかもしれません。
来年以降も開催されるであろうRSDにさらなる期待を込めて、2008年からはじまったRSDの歴代ボウイ関連アイテムを整理しておきたいと思います。

This previously unreleased 3 LP set was recorded live during the ISOLAR II tour at Earls Court, London on the 30th June and 1st July 1978 by Tony Visconti and was mixed by David and David Richards at Mountain Studios, Montreux, 17th – 22nd January 1979. This is the first commercial release of a rare 1977 US compilation LP on white vinyl, which was originally only a promotional release. The tracks are drawn from the Low and “Heroes” albums (all audio remastered from the “A New Career In A New Town” box set). The package now features a newly designed inner sleeve with black and white images taken in Berlin in 1977 by Corrine Schwab.

Let’s Dance (Full Length Demo)

This black vinyl 45 rpm 12” single features the first appearance of the full length demo of ‘Let’s Dance’, previously released in an edited form through digital download and streaming services for David’s birthday on 8th January this year. The full length version clocks in at 7.34, compared the edit which is 5.19 in length. Both versions were mixed by Nile Rodgers (original co-producer of the demo with David) in December of last year. The demo is backed by the live version of ‘Let’s Dance’, which was recorded live at Pacific National Exhibition Coliseum in Vancouver on 12th September 1983 and mixed by Bob Clearmountain. This version can be seen on the Serious Moonlight concert film, and was also previously available on the reverse of the Australian David Bowie Is exhibition as an exclusive yellow vinyl 7” single. The sleeve of the 12” single is a colour variation of the original Let’s Dance single cover.

In August 1971, David Bowie’s manager, Tony Defries had 500 promo LPs pressed to secure Bowie and fellow Mainman artist Dana Gillespie a record deal. This promo album, featuring seven Bowie songs on one Side A and five by Gillespie on the flip is often referred to as the BOWPROMO white label album. It came in generic white outer and inner sleeves, and had no printed labels so its matrix number (BOWPROMO 1A-1/1B-1) is the only way to safely identify it. This Record Store Day release faithfully replicates the original promo, with Bowie’s seven tracks on one side, and adds five exclusive Bowie prints.

“1984” originally appeared on David Bowie’s “Diamond Dogs” album and draws its inspiration from the George Orwell book of the same name. It was released as a single in 1974. The b-side was recorded live in December 1974 on “The Dick Cavett Show” and has had limited release since then. This is the first time it appears on vinyl.
